Editing plays a pivotal role in who gender is represented
within this clip of Doctor Who.
Firstly in the
beginning scenes of this clip there are a lot of longer shots on the females or
the main character Martha in particular before the shot is moved on. This gave
the audience a chance to see the true fear in her eyes and to the audience this
can be interpreted as highlighting the weakness that this woman possess. To me
this is suggesting that Colin Teague the director is this moment wants to perceive
the women in this scene as being weak and fearful.
Additionally to this
although there are longer cuts on all the women there seems to be a frequently more
and quicker jump cuts on the men. This is suggesting that the men are getting
more screen time and therefore a more important and needed to be seen for
although a shorter amount time but far more often than the women.
There is a significant
amount of flash backs toward the middle of the scene, this is contrasting to
the beginning of the scene. These flashbacks change the audience’s opinion or perception
of the women. In the flashbacks Teague turns it around and in the end makes
Martha look to be growing stronger and lose her weakness. This is further
enhanced by the jumps between her and the ticking clock whilst building tension
this is showing her to be getting stronger every second and eventually fighting
back the men, giving off the idea that women aren’t always weak and sometimes
come back fighting.
Finally when the
doctor stars coming back to life- there is cuts between all the characters
despite their gender showing all the various emotions and perceiving all the
genders to be equal.
